For artists seeking to make a statement, Seattle can be an intimidating, daunting place, as one artist's voice can easily be drowned out by the sea of other bands inhabiting the birthplace of alternative rock. The Four Thousands Holes Music Cooperative is a collection of Seattle musical artists focused on furthering their own ability to be heard.
In a colossal, competitive market, there are innumerable obstacles for any single artist or band to carve out even the humblest of niches. But, banded together and as a collective, we fervently believe a group of artists supporting each other can indeed change the world. One "hole" can be easily overlooked; taken together, 4,000 cannot be ignored.
Today's music scene is heavy on style and image, and less concerned with substance. To succeed today, it's almost like you have to be cut from a certain “reality TV” mold. You begin to wonder ... if a band like the Ramones or Nirvana were trying to make it today, would they even have a chance? The 4K gives artists who have something profoundly important to say that chance.
The 4K seeks to embrace a spirit of collaboration, leveraging the skills and talents of members to enable those who otherwise would not have a voice. Membership is open to all artists (specifically but not limited to those of the audio variety, and regardless of genre), and all those wonderful people out there who support local music. Members are expected to be active and to find some small way to contribute to the support of other members and/or The 4K.
I was born and raised in Honolulu, from the land of the Aloha Spirit. Back home, we're all about spreading the love and working together for a greater good. My band, Grim Smiley, hopes to be bringing a little bit of that Aloha Spirit to Seattle.
